Women’s Studies Programs

Programs in women’s studies are interdisciplinary, meaning they draw from a number of different fields. Women’s studies looks at issues of gender, politics, feminism and sexuality. Students interested in women’s studies can earn undergraduate and graduate degrees. Some colleges will offer a stand-alone program, while others permit students to design an individualized degree where they take interdisciplinary courses that address issues related to women.

At the undergraduate level, the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth offers a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies that can be completed entirely online. The degree qualifies students for graduate women’s studies programs, as well as graduate programs in law, psychology and education. The curriculum includes courses in women’s studies, feminist theory and feminist research methods.

Washington State University’s undergraduate program in women’s studies looks at the ways in which gender roles affect various aspects of everyday life. The curriculum at WSU includes courses in global feminism and the theory of women’s studies; internships are also available.

The two-year master’s program in women’s studies at Southern Connecticut State University requires students to take courses in feminist theory and research methods. Students have the option of submitting a thesis, taking a comprehensive exam or completing a special project as a final requirement for graduation. Field experience is also required for all students in the women’s studies program.

The PhD program in women’s studies at Rutgers University prepares graduates for careers in teaching and research. Degree candidates take required courses in feminist theory and methodologies along with a seminar on gender and sexuality. PhD students are required to pass a oral and written examinations and defend a dissertation. Proficiency in a second language is also mandatory for students in the women’s study PhD program.
