Women’s Studies: History Made Every Moment

Those who have an interest in women’s studies often first think of women’s history.  The past century has been an incredible one for women.  But understanding where women are today is only partly dependent upon studying the history of gender relations and how they have changed over time.  History is being made daily, as the saying goes, and women’s studies is an especially exciting field for both women and men to pursue for this very reason.

Educational opportunities, career opportunities, and social expectations have changed drastically for women in the past decade alone.  And one could say that the role women play in our culture and society is in flux.  It is difficult to predict how this role will shift in the coming years, and this makes women’s studies a very viable field in education.  That’s especially true for those pursuing graduate degrees and doctoral studies currently, or considering taking that direction in their educational careers.

Part of the reason the role of women in society has become such a hot topic for research at the moment is the state of the world itself. The international community is becoming increasingly connected–we truly live in a global community thanks to the internet and advances in communications technology.  This globalization has highlighted the unbelievable variance in the role of the female gender in different cultures around the world. This is as true in developed countries as it is in comparing first world to third world cultures, to the point of creating friction in international relations.

If you’re looking to pursue a career in education, research, or even international business, women’s studies is a field of study you should not overlook. It may afford you opportunities for advancement.
